Foam 101

Why is Foam Important?

We spend a ton of time picking out just the perfect fabric. The right color, texture, patterns and designs. Additionally, we also look for comfort in our selection.

But if the padding is broken down all that effort is selecting that fabric will be short lived. A lot of time fabric can wear from the inside out. If the fabric, vinyl or leather selection does not have a firm sustainable foundation then the performance of the covering is considerably lacking.

Many of my customers save big $$ buying economy furniture then upgrading the foam to give their fabric better support comfort and wear. As a result, we are able to put together something aesthetically appealing as well as physically comfortable.

Then there is the common notion that when a chair padding goes flat, we should throw it out. You don’t have to do that. Just bring it by the shop and we can replace the pad for you.

So the next thing we look at is which thickness/density is needed. I can help you navigate through the foam process.

For the purpose of this blog we will be discussing different densities and thickness’.

  • Foam is priced per board foot like lumbar. The more dense, the higher the cost.
  • I carry 4 different density in varies inch by inch thickness.

What we need to do is get the right thickness and density to insure the best comfort and wear ability for you fabric. Most sofa’s for example would have a 5” thick foam and 402 density rating..

A Restaurant booth would be more like a 3” pad with a 602 density rating.
